Miss Pettigrew’s Christian Worldview

by WCB

I have never been much of a movie goer toer. I know, I know, I need to get out more. Still.

There’s another new movie out that I am not planning go see - Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.

“Guinevere Pettigrew, a middle-aged London governess, and daughter of a vicar finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. An attempt to gain new employment catapults her into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse. She consequently finds herself in a quandry because “morals are very important to [her].”

The theme - every woman has her day. Oh boy!

One thing struck me, morals mentioned in a Hollywood production? Is that possible?

The Point asks the question, and this also caught my eye, “What’s a movie without a Christian worldview angle, after all?”

I wonder here out loud, do movies have worldviews? Christian worldviews? Do Christians even have worldviews for that matter?

One of the classes here at PACC on Wednesday night is tackling this very issue - Total Truth - The Christian Worldview. This topic is also at the heart of this new and young blog.

I read an interesting statistic today - Technorati has some 113 million blogs registered. That’s about the population of the entire country of Japan. In fact, about 37% of all blogs are written in Japanese, and many of those from cell phones. But, I am getting off topic.I wondered…how many of those 113 million blogs are written by Christians? How many of those blogs could be recognized as being written by Christians from the content? How many of those blogs just mentioned/used the words Christian Worldview?

I know the answer. Technorati says there were just 9-10 mentions of Christian Worldview in the past month.

“Christian Worldview” per day for the last 30 days.

Technorati Chart

Surprised? Is that a lot? a few? 113 million people posting, say on average 10-20 times a month = 1-2 billion posts in a month and ‘Christian worldview’ was mentioned only 10 times?!

Ask a Christian - What’s your Christian worldview and the answer from many might be “What’s a worldview?”

The Christian without a worldview is not alone. Nobody else is talking about it. Not a few of those mentions listed up by Technorati are the same person/blog.

I have a worldview. How I live is based on my Christian convictions. Ask me what I think about whatever and most always I will answer the question based on something I read in Scripture. My faith in Christ permeates my daily life, what I think, how I act, the way I view things. It’s my Christian Worldview. There, I said it.

How about you? How much does your Christian faith affect the way you live your daily life, vote, eat, talk, make channel selections, choose what you download, how you drive, conserve, or waste? How much do you think outside of your own world?

More questions than answers, to be sure. But, if a Christian is not thinking outside of their own little space, then the Christian is not thinking.

Wow! An amazing statistic. And lots of good questions for me to ponder.

  2. Vivian Says:

Everyone has a worldview, they just might not know it. Answers.com defines worldview as “The overall perspective from which one sees and interprets the world.”

Sometimes you hear the question, “Is nothing sacred?” However, Nancy Pearcey, the author of “Total Truth” would seem to ask the opposite question: How can anything be considered secular, when everything came from God?

Pearcey also says, “Nothing falls outside the scope of the central turning points in biblical history: Creation, Fall, and Redemption…. Just as all of creation was originally good, and all was affected by the Fall, so too all will be redeemed.”

So as Bill says, we as Christians should strive to interpret the world through God’s eyes. In our Wed PM class, we will continue to discuss the challenges of living accordingly.
